Open research presents specific challenges for those engaged in disciplinary, methodological and epistemological research approaches that are ‘non-normative’ in the context of open research practices. This session aims to open a forum for discussing these challenges and provide an opportunity to contribute to the design of guidelines and training options for improving open and transparent research practices particularly among non-quantitative researchers.

The presentation introduces some of my recent work on teaching reproducibile research practices in methodology courses, and opens a discussion around the wider challenges of reproducibility in sociology based on a reading of an article by Auspurg and Brüderl (2021).

The presentation analyzes how changes in naturalization policies that provide preferential access to citizenship for ethnic kin living in neighboring states affect ethno-national identities and migration in Central and Eastern Europe. The two case studies discussed in the paper are Hungary and Romania, whose post-EU-accession changes to their citizenship legislations allowed for a large number of ethnic Hungarians and Romanians living outside the ‘mother countries’ – often in neighboring non-EU states – to access their respective national citizenships without any residence requirements, and therefore to also gain full EU citizenship rights, including the right to free movement and non-discrimination in all member countries of the European Union. The paper explores the relationship between kin-state extraterritorial citizenship rights, ethno-national identities and migration from several angles, taking a broadly qualitative political-sociological approach.

The event was part of the project “Migration in the Balkans, before and after joining the EU”, led by Instituti EKONOMIKS (The Kosovo Institute for Economic Development) and Făgăraș Research Institute, and supported by the International Alumni Center gGmbH (iac Berlin) and the Robert Bosch Foundation.

The 2016 EU Referendum in the United Kingdom has set the country on the path to leaving the European Union on 29 March 2019. Some of the most immediately affected by the 'Brexit' process are the millions of EU citizens living in the UK. But what exactly is the 'effect' of Brexit on EU 'migrants' lives, and how could it be measured? We have previously addressed this question by measuring the degree to which free-moving EU citizens are being pushed towards national legal integration through measures such as naturalisation (Moreh et al. Forthcoming; McGhee et al. 2017). In this paper we focus on findings from a new follow-up original e-survey completed in October 2018. Here we frame the 'Brexit effect' more narrowly in terms of life satisfaction and future outlook, using measurement variables comparable to those adopted in the European Social Survey. Examining a sample of Polish nationals living in the UK (N=615), we test the effect of the Brexit process on the 'life satisfaction' of our participants. Our results present a complex picture of the negative effect of Brexit on the lives of members of the largest EU 'migrant' community in the UK. Through this analysis, we make two original contributions: first, to a classical area of the study of human well-being (Veenhoven 1984); and second, to the understanding of the individual-level effects of de-Europeanization.
